TOWN OF SEVEN DEVILS RECREATION PLAN
** June 12, 2008 **
PROLOGUE <=
/u>–
The Seal of the Town of Seven Devils is divided into four quadrants. Two depict the natural beauty of t=
he
area, the third depicts residential aspects and the fourth depicts recreati=
on, a
golfer and a skier. The Town's
Vision Statement and Comprehensive Land Use Plan effectively address the
protection and enhancement of the area's natural beauty and control of
residential growth, but cover recreation only by noting, "The Town of
Seven Devils is a residential and recreational community –" and
"There is a privately owned golf course and ski slope –." This document corrects the past la=
ck of
attention to recreation.
VISION= – The Town of Seven Devils will encourage and support a variety of recreational facilities, both public and private. Some facilities exist now; others = will be created in accord with interest and support of residents. Some facilities will encourage pas= sive rather than active participation. All will be consistent with the Comprehensive Land Use Plan. Therefore, the purposes of this pl= an are:
RECREATION=
IN THE
FUTURE – There are two broad important issues here. One is the specifics of what
recreational facilities / activities should be added to what exists now.
· The Town Council shall appoint a continuing Recreation Commission with the broad mission of achieving the purposes set forth in the Vision section of this document. The Commission shall be governed b= y the understanding that for the foreseeable future there will be no line item in= the Town budget for recreation and that new ventures in recreation can be undertaken only as resources found by the Commission permit. Specific duties and responsibiliti= es of the Commission are inclusive of but not limited to those shown below:
o
§ Support for and enhancement of existing recreational facilities and activities.
§ Assessing viability of the top 10 "shou= ld have" items from the community survey responses – Greenway/Hiking Trails, Golf, Walking, Skiing, General Park, Driving Range, Picnic Grounds, Fishing, Snowboarding, Putting Green – while insuring due considerati= on of practicability.
§ Action on low cost volunteer run activities (Book Club is an example. 55 = people said we should have it; 39 would volunteer time to help and 24 would suppor= t it financially.)
§ Liaison with ASU Recreation Management Group= .
§ Identification of funding sources for recrea= tion facilities/activities.
§ Liaison with the Seven Devils Tourism Development Authority and discussion of possible joint ventures, e.g. developing a guide to local and regional recreational activities.
§ Discussions / action on all "remaining" "should have items".
o
o
o
· Three years after the appointment of a Recreation Commission, the Town Council shall establish a mechanism to revi= ew and evaluate the work of the Commission.
